All Boxed Out?

How have you been coping with this recent cold snap?

This is the first time in years that it has been this bitter, and as plummeting temperatures and failing rail infrastructure tend not to combine into the most effective transport system, I decided to forget about the trains and work from home for the whole week.

With the TV weather folk talking of impending snow and cold weather systems, I have been filling those long winter evenings by curling up with some DVD box sets.

Whilst probably not sounding like the most exciting of late night entertainment options, the DVD choice does, to pardon the pun, tick a lot of boxes.

For a start, with no adverts, and having complete control over access to the episodes, viewing a television show this way is a real no brainer – it is by far the best way to enjoy a TV series.

The Christmas period provided me with a good supply of box set booty. The haul included series seven of ‘Game Of Thrones’, series nine and ten of ‘The Big Bang Theory’, series two of the drug dealing tale ‘Narcos’, and a family member had series two of the shares and shorting drama ‘Billions’.

As you can tell, at the start of the big 18 I was pretty much spoiled for choice. One sensible thing I did was to pace the consumption of family favourite ‘Game of Thrones’.

So far, I have limited my viewing to one episode a week. The problem is that there are only seven episodes for series seven, and now as mid-February approaches, I am up to episode six.

I have seen all of series two of ‘Billions’, and serious inroads have been made into ‘Narcos’ series two – I have seen six of the 10 episodes.

In terms of ‘Big Bang’, series nine has been viewed, and the half way mark for series ten has been reached.

All the above stats indicate that an entertainment crisis point is looming very rapidly on the horizon – soon all the box set episodes will be consumed. Even though new series of these programmes are being made, they are likely to be out on DVD in December 2018 at the earliest.

How to fill this TV series black hole? The uncharitable amongst you may think the obvious solution is to ‘Get a life’. While kind of getting this point of view, the old adage ‘Easier said than done’ comes into play.

The oncoming DVD drought adds a sense of urgency to my quest – the hunt for the next box set continues!
